Mentorships

We offer opportunities for self-directed writers who are working (or would like to work) on a specific writing project. We connect you with a helpful mentor who provides you with individually tailored, constructive assistance designed to help you strengthen your writing, sustain your efforts, and complete your projects. SCN mentors are published lifewriters. They fully understand the challenges we face when we choose to write about our lives.

What is a Mentor?
A mentor is an attentive and responsive reader who provides constructive feedback that encourages you to develop your own critical perspectives on your writing. She may incidentally provide editing and proofreading advice, but she is not an editor or a proofreader. Rather, she is an experienced guide who wants to show you how your writing might be improved and what kind of new directions you might consider. The best mentor is professionally recognized for creative excellence, understands your needs as a writer, is an experienced and sympathetic teacher, believes in you and your work, and offers positive, constructive dialogue.

How Does the Program Work?
You choose a mentor from our list of those who are available and work with her in a single no-obligation introductory session (required, unless you and the mentor have worked together before and she is willing to accept you to a mentorship or extended mentorship). If you and the mentor feel that you will benefit from her help, you may enroll for a mentorship of three sessions or an extended mentorship (six sessions). A "session" consists of the submission of your written work (the length to be specified by the mentor), and her return of that work, with a critique and suggestions for improvement. Questions? Email us.

What Does It Cost?

  • Introductory Session: $70 [SCN members: $60]
  • Mentorship (three sessions): $210 [SCN members: $175]
  • Extended Mentorship (six sessions): $420 [SCN members: $385]
