Class Title: Song of Home: Creating a Family Cookbook of Memories

Synopsis

Learn the basics and begin the collection and assembly of a cookbook of favorite family recipes, traditions, photos and memories.

Class Description

Using the medium of food, students will learn how to collect and compile favorite family recipes, memories and traditions, to create their own "Song of Home."

At the end of the class, students will have a working plan, with samples, to continue developing a collective family cookbook of recipes, family photographs and memoirs/stories.

All instruction materials, discussion, and assignments will be posted through the course YahooGroup. Students will be expected to prepare and participate in class discussion of each unit of study.

Outline

  • Unit 1: Introductions, discussion and organization of course. Identify the concept of family.
  • Unit 2: Design methods of material collection.
  • Unit 3: Identify, define, list and describe the differences/benefits between a gastro-genealogical memoir of recipes, photos, memories and traditions, and that of a standard collection of family recipes.
  • Unit 4: Develop outline and format recipes, photographs and stories. Organizing material and developing Word format.
  • Unit 5: Develop elements required for each submission, (ingredients, assembly, baking time, temperature and number of servings.
  • Unit 6: Submit a complete sample of three recipes, three photographs, and three family stories.
  • Unit 7: Brainstorm missing elements, dedications, and the need for further assistance from family members, if possible.
  • Unit 8: Develop lists/options for publication. Wrap Up, address outstanding issues or questions.

Student Skills, Equipment, and Time Required

Intermediate level Word, Internet, email, printer, and scanner (to scan photos). Students should be able to complete assignments using a word processor. Email and participation in Yahoo group are required. Time required: 1-2 hours per week. Class will involve students' group participation (reading/responding to each other's writing, sharing stories with fellow students, posting photos, etc).

Instructor Bio

Sylvia Dickey Smith Sylvia Dickey Smith, M.Ed., L.P.C. (retired) is a collector of family recipes, tradition, folklore and storytelling. She and her grown daughter developed their own cookbook of family memories, a much-treasured family heirloom presented to each family unit at a family reunion. Sylvia writes and leads women's retreats and groups on the topic of strong women. One of her favorite topics is Baubo, The Belly Goddess. She writes nonfiction essays (Divorcing God) mystery (Dance On His Grave, Deadly Sins Deadly Secrets, and Dead Wreckoning), historical fiction (A War of Her Own) and a cookbook (Sassy Southern Classy Cajun). Each novel has placed first in writing competitions and is the 2010 recipient of the Barbara Burnett Smith Mentoring Author Foundation's SAGE award. Visit her website.
