Synopsis
Powerful transitons in our lives challenge us, help us grow, and create new chapters in our lives. Students will explore the psychological stages of transition and use writing strategies to help achieve greater balance, insight and powerful creativity.
Class Description
In this course, students will learn the three major stages of transition and how to write through life's transitions using strategies presented in the instructor's ebook, Writing Through Transitions, assignments, and class discussions.
At the end of this course, students will be able to identify the basic psychological stages of transition and resources for completing each stage; select writing strategies appropriate for each stage and the students' needs; and develop a written "transition history" for future transitions.
Instructor will post a weekly assignment and will respond regularly to students' posts. Additionally, she will provide her email for private, individual questions and comments, if needed. The cost of the ebook is included in the price of the class.
Outline
- Unit One: Understanding the stages of transition and writing about how we let go of past situations, roles, and/or beliefs. Students will read a chapter in the ebook, select at least one exercise, and reflect on that experience in a post.
- Unit Two: Discovering and writing about the powerful in-between time of confusion and creatvity. Mining this stage through imagery and metaphors. Students read a chapter, select at least one writing strategy, and post a reflection.
- Unit Three: Embracing the new beginning, reintegration and distilled wisdom through writing. Students read a chapter from the ebook, select at least one writing strategy and post their reflection.
Student Skills, Equipment, and Time Required
Basic computer skills, all writing skill levels, ability to post responses on Internet group. Students will spend approximately two hours a week, depending on number of exercises selected.

SCN members: $96. Non-SCN members: $120.
Instructor Bio
Leia Francisco, M.A, CJF, has been a life coach for 20 years and is a certified journal facilitator who helps people create powerful transitions. She is a former college writing instructor, an author and editor of career planning textbooks, a columnist, and a faculty member of The Center for Journal Therapy, where she helps train journal faciltators.
